Artwork «The Martyr Raja’a Abu Amasheh (Al-Shaheeda Raja’a Abu Amasheh), 1976.»by Palestinian artist Abdul Hay Mosallam Zarara. It is acrylic over a sawdust-and-glue relief on wood.

It memorializes Raja Abu ‘Amasha (also spelled Raja’a Abu Amasheh), born in 1938 in Salama near Jaffa. After the 1948 displacement she lived as a refugee in Aqabat Jaber camp near Jericho, finished school in Jerusalem, and was active in student and women’s organizing. In 1955 she led a protest in Jerusalem against the Baghdad Pact and was killed; she is remembered as one of the earliest female martyrs of the Palestinian student movement. Zarara’s panel, made about two decades later, turns that biography into an icon: embroidered dress and keffiyeh for cultural continuity, flag and weapon for armed and political struggle, blood for the cost.
